Lucas Dobrzanski, President:


Lucas Dobrzanski is the founder, president and coach of the Kern Athletic
Fencing Foundation.

A retired Chemical Engineer, competitive fencer and a three time member of
the USA veteran team to World Championships, is a dedicated promoter and
contributor to the success of the Kern Athletic Fencing Foundation.Lucas started his fencing career at the Los Angeles Athletic Club under Metre D ’Arms Delmar Calvert. He fenced on the UCD fencing team and was the founding president of the UCD fencing club in 1967.

After years of inactivity, Lucas started back in fencing in 2003.  He has fenced in all 3 weapons at national competitions and was a finalist in several national tournaments of the USFA.

He represented the US in three Veterans World Championship with a best finish of 15th in the world.  He is the founding president of Kern Athletic Fencing Foundation, coach and fencer. Dedicated to put Kern County fencing on the map by producing national level fencers while promoting the charitable side of the foundation thru the “Smart Fencing for Kern County” program.


Jeff Flores, Director:


Jeff Flores, Kern High School District Trustee, has been fighting side by side with local officials, non-profits, and private businesses to improve the quality of life for our community for decades.

He currently serves as Chief of Staff to Kern County Supervisor Mike Maggard and championed the East Bakersfield Visioning process to make a blueprint for change and improvements to East Bakersfield.

Jeff received his BA in Political Science at the University of San Diego with a concentration in International Relations, Minor in Spanish, and Master of Public Policy and Administration from CSU Bakersfield, with Post Graduate work in the resources sector at the University of Queensland Australia.

Jeff is one of the original KAFF board members and a foil fencer.



Buel Boaz, Director:


Buel Boaz is a retired administrator for Kern County, and a US Navy veteran.
He is one of the original KAFF board member, coach and all 3 weapons fencer.

Buel also raises and shows purebred Otter Hounds and Bloodhounds. His dogs have won many shows and championships.






Ian Silva, Vice President:

Ian Silva started fencing at California State University, Bakersfield in the 1990s and has returned to the sport in recent years as a member of the Kern Athletic Fencing Foundation.  Primarily a foilist, he served for a time as an assistant coach.  However, he has largely stopped coaching to focus on bringing his own skill set up to date.  Ian retired from the Kern County Sheriff’s Office in 2022 as a Detentions Lieutenant and currently serves as a Field Representative with the California Board of State and Community Corrections.






Mark Payette, Treasurer:


Mark graduated from the University of Southern California in 1996 and practiced public accounting with BDO Seidman, LLP in Los Angeles.

Mark has spent over twenty years in the Finance and Accounting world in various industries from Film/TV Entertainment, Music Entertainment, Large-Scale Agriculture, Semiconductor Manufacturing, Internet Services, to Health and Fitness.  He is currently working in Renewable/Sustainable Energy and is the Chief Financial Officer at Bakersfield Renewable Fuels, an organization which is building a Renewable Diesel Fuel refinery in Bakersfield, California.

Mark, a saber fencer, enjoys spending time with his wife and many children and volunteering within the community.



Jenifer Dill, Secretary:

Jeni is originally from Los Angeles County and has lived in numerous other states before returning to California to be near family.  She love travelling, hiking, and spending time with her two sons — one of whom is an avid foil fencer.   Jeni has a master’s degree in Writing and Poetics and has been a professional editor since 2006.


Elizabeth Smith, Director:


Originally from northern California, she now calls Bakersfield her home. She received her Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration and Marketing from California State University, Bakersfield.  Elizabeth currently works as a Marketing Strategist for Lamar Advertising Company.


She’s a proud mom of three, two who are aspiring fencers. She enjoys community involvement and hiking the great outdoors!





Linda Sullenger, Director:


Linda Sullenger is a community development professional and philanthropist with 40 years of
experience in a variety of industries, who has raised countless dollars to support growth and
development initiatives.   Her past lives have included working in the world of finance, resource
development, and working with local attorneys. Passionate about worthy causes, she’s boots on
the ground working behind the scenes. Charities of choice include SPCA, CASA, Junior
League, Women and Girls Fund, and of course Boys and Girls Clubs. Additionally she has trained
therapy dogs that brighten the day for patients and staff at Memorial and Adventist Health hospitals.







Shane Bryan, Director:


Shane is a Bakersfield native. Born and raised in Kern County, he graduated from Garces Memorial High School and continued his education at California State University, Bakersfield, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

Shane joined the Trovato Wealth Management Team in January 2016 as a Personal Financial Strategies Specialist.   Shane is very active in the community and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club, Active 20-30 Club and other non-profit organizations.
